Tandem is an international exchange programme for cultural managers. Since its inception in 2011, Tandem has supported long-term collaborations, knowledge development and networking opportunities. More than 200 cultural managers from over 100 cities in 30 countries across wider Europe have taken part in the programme. Tandem encompasses five ongoing editions, each focusing on different regions and topics. There are 10 international collaborations participating in the current round of Tandem Turkey, which comes to an end in September, 2016.
Tandem Turkey is now inviting cultural managers based in Turkey and all 28 EU countries to apply for its fourth round, which will run from June 2016 to September 2017.
Tandem Turkey aims to establish long-term collaborations between cultural organisations from Turkey and the EU countries. Tandem believes that the burning cultural and social questions of our times can be addressed much more creatively and effectively through inspiring learning experiences, working with new organisations and across new localities. Our vision is to see strong networks of creative communities and cultural change makers emerge from this programme.
Tandem is primarily a learning and networking programme. Therefore, the priority is on creating and sharing the process rather than the product itself. This process oriented stance makes Tandem unique in that it is not a merely funding entity, but a wider network of knowledge sharing and capacity development.
Who is it for?
The programme addresses cultural managers and project coordinators of non-profit organisations. Participants can be at the beginning of their career or experienced professionals from Turkey and all 28 EU countries.
What do we offer?
Tandem Turkey is designed to strengthen participants’ skills in the field of cross-cultural collaboration and international project management. Engaging and interacting with a Tandem partner from abroad and experiencing a different approach to cultural participation work will bring about new transnational connections, practices and methodological insight.
How does it work?
The cultural managers selected for the 2016-17 Tandem Turkey round will be engaged in an intensive one-year transnational collaboration process, which includes the realisation of a joint interdisciplinary pilot project that is linked to their cultural expertise.
Upon completion of the Tandem collaboration project, our Tandem network offers various possibilities for follow-up projects and on-going exchange both online and offline with other Tandem participants from Europe and neighbouring countries.
Based on the quality of application, the applicants’ relevant skills, experience and matching potential, a balanced mix of 40 participants (up to 20 participants from Turkey and 20 participants from EU) will be invited to find a matching partner at the Partner Forum. Note that priority is given to applicants based outside Istanbul. Therefore, in each Tandem round, we set a limit on Istanbul-based participants from Turkey (20%).
After identifying their potential partner at the Forum, Tandem pairs submit their collaboration plans to continue to the main phase of the TANDEM programme for the next year.
Application and next steps
For the fourth round of Tandem Turkey we received 65 applications from 22 EU countries and 50 applications from 17 different cities all over Turkey. All applicants will be informed not later than 13th May if they are invited to join the Partner Fourm in Izmir vom 15.-19.6.2016.

Stiftung Mercator is a private foundation, which fosters science and the humanities, education and international understanding. It specifically initiates, develops and funds projects and partner organisations in the thematic fields to which it is committed: it wants to strengthen Europe, improve integration through equal educational opportunities for everyone, drive forward the energy transition as a trigger for global climate change mitigation and firmly anchor cultural education in schools. Stiftung Mercator feels a strong sense of loyalty to the Ruhr region, the home of the founding family and the foundation’s headquarters. www.stiftung-mercator.de
Anadolu Kültür was established in 2002 by individuals active in the fields of arts and culture in order to carry out artistic and cultural projects in cities across Turkey and abroad. Anadolu Kültür implements these projects with the belief that cultural exchange and cooperation can lead to dialogue and mutual understanding among individuals with different social backgrounds and national or ethnic identities. Anadolu Kültür works to create open spaces for artistic collaboration and critical debate. It aims to contribute to social change and the development of a society free of prejudices in which pluralism and cultural diversity are valued and perceived as assets rather than a source of conflict. Anadolu Kültür aims to create an awareness of the richness and diversity of cultural heritage, while fostering a recognition of the mutually shared elements of this heritage. It collaborates with other non-governmental organisations, municipalities and local initiatives which share the same objectives. www.anadolukultur.org
